2020 (MMXX) was a leap year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2020th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 20th year of the 3rd millennium, the 20th year of the 21st century, and the 1st year of the 2020s decade.
2020 has been designated as Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organization.[1] The United Nations has declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health.[2] 2020 has been designated as International Year of Sound by the International Commission for Acoustics.[3]
2020 has been heavily defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to severe global social and economic disruption including an economic recession.[4]

- February 27 – 2020 stock market crash: The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) plunges by 1,190.95 points, or 4.4%, to close at 25,766.64, its largest one-day points decline at the time. This follows several days of large falls, marking the worst week for the index since 2008, triggered by fears of the spreading COVID-19 coronavirus.[31]

- A conditional peace agreement is signed between the United States and the Taliban in Doha, Qatar.[39] The U.S. begins gradually withdrawing troops from Afghanistan on March 10.[40]

- March 5 – The International Criminal Court authorizes the Afghanistan War Crimes inquiry to proceed, allowing for the first time for U.S. citizens to be investigated.[41]
- March 8 – COVID-19 pandemic: Italy places 16 million people in quarantine, more than a quarter of its population, in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19.[42] A day later, the quarantine is expanded to cover the entire country, becoming the first country to apply this measure nationwide.[43]
- March 9 – International share prices fall sharply in response to a Russo-Saudi oil price war and the impact of COVID-19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) plunges more than 2,000 points, the largest fall in its history up to that point.[44] Oil prices also plunge by as much as 30 percent in early trading, the biggest fall since 1991.[45]

- March 12 – Global stock markets crash due to continued concerns over COVID-19 and the U.S. travel ban on the Schengen Area. The Dow Jones Industrial Average goes into free fall, closing at over −2,300 points, the worst losses for the index since 1987.[47]

- March 16 – The Dow Jones Industrial Average falls by 2,997.10, the single largest point drop in history and the second-largest percentage drop ever at 12.93 percent, an even greater crash than Black Monday (1929). This follows the U.S. Federal Reserve announcing that it will cut its target interest rate to 0–0.25 percent.[50]

- European leaders close the EU's external and Schengen borders for at least 30 days in an effort to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.[52]
- The island of Luzon, the largest island of the Philippines, is placed under the enhanced community quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic in the country as announced by President Rodrigo Duterte.[53]
- UEFA postpones the Euro 2020 association football tournament until summer 2021.[54]

- March 23 – COVID-19 pandemic: By now ten nations have joined the Solidarity trial, a WHO-sponsored group dedicated to finding a cure against COVID-19. Four European countries (Switzerland, France, Norway and Spain), two American countries (Argentina and Canada), three Asian countries (Iran, Thailand, Bahrain) and South Africa are leading efforts to finding a cure.

- India goes into lockdown to contain COVID-19. The total number of people in the world facing some form of pandemic-related movement restriction now exceeds 2.6 billion, a third of the global population.[57][58]

- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang reports that the domestically transmitted epidemic was "basically blocked" and the domestic outbreak was now controlled.[60] Two days later, China temporarily suspends entry for foreign nationals with visas or residence permits, effective midnight March 28.[61]
- The International Olympic Committee and Japan suspend the 2020 Summer Olympics until 2021.[62] On March 30, the Summer Olympics are rescheduled for July 23 to August 8, 2021.[63][64]

- Militants in the Philippines, Syria, Yemen, and Libya agree to U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres' call for a ceasefire; some accept medical aid for themselves and the noncombatants in their communities. Guterres also asked wealthy countries to provide $2 billion to aid in fighting the virus. Colombia and Venezuela discussed a common response to the global pandemic, and the UAE airlifts aid to Iran.[67]
